Apple Newton Wonder

Apple Newton Wonder

A terrific cooking apple that is still as popular today as it was when it was introduced in the 1870's. 'Newton Wonder' produces large, red with a pale green flush fruit that has a sharp and juicy taste. The perfect partner to Bramley's, as it has a slightly sweeter flavour, they can be used within cooking or eaten fresh. The apples will store well, often from November through to March, with a larger crop typically grown every other year. We recommend planting in direct sun in well-drained, non-acidic soil where they will thrive.

Planting

Make sure the roots are planted in well prepared soil, with enough room to develop.

Soil Type

Moderately fertile, well drained soil and non acid soil

Apple trees are suitable for planting in most types of moderately fertile, well drained soil, although they do not like acid soil. If possible prepare the ground some time in advance of planting. Open out holes and plant with enough space to accomodate the roots without cramping them. Plant in a sunny location as they do not prosper too well in the shade. Make sure that you plant with a stake, as this will be needed for at least five years to help support the tree. Begin weed control prior to planting and keep a clean ring around the plant (with a radius of approx 24 inches).
Young trees must be watered thoroughly and sprinkle with fertilizer each spring. You can also mulch in April with rotted manure or compost around the base of the trunk. They should be planted in well sheltered locations. They will blossom and flower in Spring and fruit is normally ready to be picked throughout Autumn. It is partially self-fertile and a good pollinator for other apple trees so is the ideal choice for larger gardens.
